The simple three-lettered word ‘why’ is a powerful, and necessary tool. Whether used to elicit strong emotions when wielded incessantly by my children, or implemented as part of an exploratory exercise to analyze why I do what I do, the word is unique in its utility. My focus here will be on the latter, although a deep dive into why ‘why’ can be so challenging when used by my offspring is also a worthy topic that I will save for future consideration.
Stu and I started the Storehouse Mastermind at the beginning of the year. The initial members have been running through a challenging curriculum that has deepened the relationships within the group while challenging us on multiple fronts. The time has been significantly impactful and equally rewarding as we deal with strongholds, walls, stumbling blocks, or other acknowledged or unacknowledged barriers to living our best. We also share ideas on how to improve our relationships, partnerships, and businesses, which has brought tremendous value that is impossible for me to quantify. The topic we are currently tackling is exploring and creating our ‘whys.’ But before diving in and using the myriad resources available to finding our ‘why,’ we felt it important to define the word.
A simple dictionary search tells us ‘why’ means “for what cause, reason, or purpose.” When expanded to address the implications to our lives, ‘why’ has significance in how we see ourselves and the reasons we believe we are here. Before contemplating our personal ‘why’ statement, understanding the framework, meaning, process, and power of a ‘why’ is informative, overwhelming, and critical.
While the title of this post implies I am going to provide an answer to what a ‘why’ is, I simply do not know. That is a personal question for you to answer as you intentionally seek to define why you exist, what value you bring, the legacy you desire, and the impact you wish to make. To me, there is a great tragedy in not taking the time to ask these important questions of ourselves. But my recommendation is to first explore what a ‘why’ is before attempting to find your personal ‘why,’ because the clarity of what it is you are attempting to discover is in and of itself a meaningful, productive, and beautiful exercise.
I’ll leave you with this final thought from one of the men in the Storehouse Mastermind group. He said a ‘why’ is the rocket fuel that propels you toward your purpose. I love that, and when he said it, it opened my mind and heart to a whole set of previously unexplored ideas – thank you David Perez!
So now I challenge you to consider what ‘why’ means to you. Why is it important to meditate on, capture, share with others, and be accountable to? The answers could quite possibly change your life forever.
