My kids LOVE the show “Dude Perfect.” Ok, since it’s bad form to start a blog and not be completely truthful, I must admit that I LOVE “Dude Perfect” as well. I can’t get enough of their trick shots, entertaining skits, and the Rage Monster! I am also drawn to how genuine their relationships are and the obvious love these men have for each other, their families, and the FUN they share.
My kids and I recently watched an episode where they introduced a series called ‘Overtime’, which features a segment they named ‘Betcha’. In this segment, the Dude Perfect dudes make outrageous bets, the first being a diamond challenge. Tyler bets that he can shatter a diamond by hitting it with a hammer. Three of the dudes bet the diamond will shatter, two bet the diamond will survive unscathed.
What side are you on?
Since we are being honest here, I was 100% on the shatter train. My simple mind could not conceive of a stone withstanding a hammer.
I was genuinely shocked at what happened next. Tyler hit the diamond, and instead of shattering, it left a dent in the vice! I’m sure many of you reading this are not surprised in the least, but it says something that the majority of the Dudes were on the shatter train…myself included…and all very wrong.
Tyler’s words are what struck me most in the episode. He said, “This is why you have segments like ‘Betcha’. Because sometimes you can feel so strongly that you know an outcome…” He is interrupted by one of the twins, who says, ‘AND BE WRONG!’
The segment made me think of all the things I feel so strongly about, the opinions I hold dear, all the things I “guarantee” (anybody else out there freely use the words ‘I guarantee’?), and the outcomes I believe are inevitable. But then you test those outcomes and find that you were wrong!
I love how the Dudes have a segment that tests their ‘certainties’, and they change and grow as a result, even if it’s something fun and of little consequence.
For the things of greater importance and consequence, do you have a ‘Betcha’ against which you test your assertions?
I’ve found I have something much better, something the Dudes share – accountability partners! If you aren’t actively testing your opinions, beliefs, and guarantees, and surrounding yourself with others that challenge you, you are missing out on serious growth opportunities.
